The exhibition is based on the above quote from Leo Tolstoy. At various times I have engaged in a dialogue between this theme and my painting. I found myself thinking about how painting can be visually beautiful while depicting a narrative that is ugly. Then I question what it means to be beautiful/good and what is ugly/bad and how beauty is used as a distraction. What rationale makes these judgments. In nature there are no judgments, only actions and consequences. I decide to paint more and question the words less.
