Common Place

Common Place is a point of departure for the paintings of Lauren Whearty and Rebekah Callaghan. It is an area of origin, a place where similar languages are spoken and shared.

These two artists’ stories resemble one another: both grew up in the same Philadelphia suburb and attended the same undergraduate school (Tyler School of Art). Their starting places coincide, as well, in their works’ subjects matter, materials, and emphases on observation. Drawing from prosaic subjects found in the studio and out the window, Lauren and Rebekah combine simple parts layered and organized with imaginative colors, patterns, and scenarios. Through the artists’ mutual love for painting and observation, their works commune with one another in process, form, and history.

In Common Place, two people begin at similar starting points to find completely distinctive outcomes. Their paintings launch similar paths and carry on a dialogue in their search to discover.
